Stormy weather headed our way

2 p.m., April 19, 2023

More stormy weather is expected in our service territory tonight, bringing the possibility of hail, lightning and wind and potentially leading to power outages. OPPD has extra staff on-hand, from forestry to line crews, ready to respond as needed.

According to the National Weather Service’s midday forecast update, strong storms will develop over southeastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa between about 6 and 7 p.m. They could bring the possibility of up to 3″ hail, with wind gusts as strong as 60-65 mph. NWS did not rule out the possibility of tornadoes. Winds this strong could cause tree damage and power outages. The graphic below shows the areas of greatest risk, according to forecasters.

If you experience a power outage, please be sure and report it online, via the OPPDConnect app or by calling 1-800-554-OPPD (6773), so we know about it and can respond. If you should encounter downed power lines, always assume they are live, high-voltage, and extremely dangerous. Stay far back, at least 30-feet, and call OPPD or 911 to report the hazard.
