OPPD responding to scattered storm outages

8:30 p.m., April 17, 2025

Our troubleshooters and repair crews are out tonight working to restore the customers who lost power during the storm that rolled through our service territory.

Right now, it looks like most of the outages are around Fort Calhoun, North Bend, and northern sections of Omaha. We have a total of 963 customers out right now, including 585 in Washington County, 342 in Douglas County and 34 in Dodge County. We’re still assessing damage and don’t have estimated restoration times right now.

As a reminder, please stay safe and report outages online at OPPD.com, via the OPPDConnect app, or by calling 1-800-554-OPPD (6773).

4 p.m., April 17, 2025 – Like you, we are watching the skies closely today in anticipation of storms this evening. OPPD is holding over additional troubleshooter and repair crews to be able to respond in the event of power outages related to severe weather.

The National Weather Service held a briefing this afternoon indicating that two different weather models showed two different possible scenarios. Both anticipated that storms are likely to begin around 6 p.m. in the Columbus area and move eastward. However, the models differ on whether those storms will move north or south of Interstate 80.  If severe weather does make its way here, it could hit the Omaha metro around 8 p.m., bringing up to 2″ diameter hail and wind gusts in excess of 60 to 70 mph, before moving out of our service territory around 10 p.m.

OPPD is preparing for the worst, as we always do, while hoping for the best. And we urge our customers to take steps in advance of the storms as well to be as prepared as possible for any damage they could bring. It’s a good idea to secure any patio furniture or other outdoor items like trampolines, to help keep them from blowing away and causing damage, such as damage to power lines. Charge up electronics like cell phones and laptop computers in advance. Know where your manual garage door release is in the event you lose power, so you can get your car out if needed. Keep flashlights and medications nearby and easy to find in the dark. And keep a disaster kit ready in your storm shelter location – stocked with water, non-perishable food, shoes, pet leashes, and other necessities

Know where to report power outages in case you lose service. You can do that online at OPPD.com, via the OPPDConnect app, or by calling 1-800-554-OPPD (6773). We rely on our customers to tell us if they lose power. We don’t automatically know. We also ask that you make sure we have your most up-to-date contact information so we can reach you about your electric service, if needed. You can do so at OPPD.com/contact.
